Healthy employees are more productive employees, and when time off for sickness and injury can be reduced, workers' compensation and health insurance costs can be decreased as well. In contrast to medical treatment, which can prove difficult and costly especially in neuromusculoskeletal cases, chiropractic has been proven to be effective in reducing industrial injuries, lowering lost time from work, shrinking medical costs, and raising productivity.
Doctors of Chiropractic are the most widely accepted providers of spinal manipulation treatment, delivering approximately 94 percent of the manipulation reimbursed by health care insurance. (Shekelle 1992)

Chiropractic: A Cost- Effective Alternative.
The high cost of back injuries poses a threat to every health plan and causes insurance cost to skyrocket. Because Doctors of Chiropractic are specially trained in the most appropriate means of diagnosis, clinical management, and prevention of these disorders, they can help contain cost and get workers back on the job in less time. Through examination and corrective adjustments, chiropractors treat the abnormally injured, fixated or displaced vertebrae to normalize the body and return it to healthy function. In addition, since chiropractic procedures do not include the use of drugs or surgery, time off for treatment or recuperation is reduced. Likewise, the high cost of medication is eliminated.

What the Research Shows?
Information from health care studies consistently illustrates that when doctors of chiropractic are part of a health care team, they can significantly lower the cost of injury care and lost work time.

Compensation costs were significantly lower for chiropractic care than for medical care. Hospitalization and medication costs were lower for chiropractic care than for medical care. Patients were diagnosed and treated by Doctors of Chiropractics in less time than by medical doctors. Patients treated by Chiropractic physicians lost less time from work than those treated by medical doctors.

Numerous studies throughout the world have shown that chiropractic treatment, including manipulative therapy and spinal adjustment, is both safe and effective. The following are excerpts from a few of the more recent studies:
" The overwhelming body of evidence shows that chiropractic management of low-back pain is more cost-effective than medical management, and that many medical therapies are of questionable validity or are clearly inadequate…" - The Manga Report (1993)

For Acute Low-Back Problems:
"For patients with acute low-back symptoms without radiculopathy, the scientific evidence suggests spinal manipulation is effective in reducing pain and perhaps speeding recovery within the first month of symptoms." Clinical Practice Guidelines, AHCPR (1994)

In 1994, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, published Acute Low Back Problems in Adults as part of its Clinical Practice Guidelines. The panel, a multidisciplinary group of health care experts, developed recommendations on the treatment of acute low-back pain based on scientific evidence and extensive literature searches. The findings concluded that spinal manipulation was "safe and effective," and recommended it as an initial form of therapy for acute low-back pain sufferers. Spinal manipulation (also called chiropractic adjustment) is the principal therapeutic procedure offered by doctors of chiropractic.
